What is bipolar disorder...

Bipolar disorder (also called manic-depressive disorder) is a medical condition that is characterized by extreme mood changes that alternate between episodes of depression and mania. Either mood can appear suddenly without an obvious trigger.  In between these extreme mood changes, the person may return to a normal mood.  Although mood changes associated with bipolar disorder can be difficult, effective treatment is available.

Research Findings:
Omega 3 fatty acids in bipolar disorder
Brigham and Women's Hospital, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School,
This study was performed to examine whether omega3 fatty acids also exhibit mood-stabilizing properties in bipolar disorder. In a 4-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, researchers compared omega3 fatty acids (9.6 g/d with placebo olive oil), in addition to usual treatment, in 30 patients with bipolar disorder. The omega3 fatty acid patient group had a significantly longer period of remission than the placebo group. Additionally, the omega3 fatty acids (9.6 g/d) were well tolerated in this group of patients.  Arch Gen Psychiatry. 1999 May;56(5):407-12.
