Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height and is an inexpensive and easy-to-perform method of screening for weight categories that may lead to health problems. Although this calculation does not measure body fat directly, research has shown that BMI correlates with direct measures of body fat, such as underwater weighing and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). However, this score does have some limits. The limits are:

  • This calculater may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
  • It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass.
  • For children and teens, 2 through 19 years old, use the BMI Calculator for Children and Teens

The waist is measured at the smallest area of the waistWaist Circumference is determined by placing a measuring tape snugly around the smallest area of your waist.

Unhealthy waist circumference is usually defined as over 40 inches in men and over 35 inches in women. Also, you can more precisely find out if you have abdominal obesity by calculating your waist to hip ratio.

Excess abdominal fat appears to be linked with a number of chronic diseases including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, migraine, stroke, diverticulitis, diverticular bleeding, and restless legs syndrome.
